And with 2022 here and ready, the talk of New Year’s resolutions has peaked. For many, the new year becomes the perfect time to prioritise and build healthy habits. The world of nutrition and exercise can be pretty overwhelming. Taking small steps is vital in creating a happier, healthier you in 2022. On that note, here are our daily healthy lifestyle tips to welcome a healthy new year – and believe us when we say, building healthy habits is incredibly rewarding.

1. Set realistic lifestyle goals

Many of us start January with the same old goals we’ve tried to achieve before. And more often than not, they are vague, boring and somewhat unrealistic. When you set goals, they must be manageable, specific and achievable – even if it takes a lot of hard work and perseverance.

Swap out “get fitter” with something like “go to the gym three times a week”. If you can track and easily keep up with your resolutions, you’re much more likely to stick to them and create healthier habits.

2. Plan ahead and stick to the schedule

Planning goes hand in hand with sticking to your goals. Without careful thought and time put aside, you may find it hard to achieve your resolutions. But by prioritising moments in your schedule, you’ll find taking productive steps towards your goals a lot easier.

We all lead busy lives. A demanding schedule can often be the reason for giving up on our goals. But staying fit and healthy can be a lot easier than first thought if you take to time to plan and break up your workouts around essential tasks. Make the most of reminders and apps that prompt you to get moving.

Grab a diary, notebook or even the calendar in your mobile phone and start pencilling in time for those healthy habits now.

3. Educate yourself on health and fitness

It would be hard to build any new habit if you didn’t have at least some know-how as to where to begin. As you start to plan and set your goals, it’s essential to educate yourself on the topics that will make achieving them that little bit easier. And you’re in luck – here are a few things you need to know before getting stuck in:

  • Drink lots of water

Keeping hydrated is essential. Every adult should consume around six to eight cups of water a day. Water is critical for keeping our organs healthy, regulating temperature and boosting the appearance of your skin, among many other things. It’s one of the vital things our bodies need to function – drinking more water should be at the top of your list.

  • Maintaining a healthy diet

Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet is top of the agenda for many of us. It doesn’t have to be about limiting your favourite foods. Instead, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, improving your health, and boosting your mood. The key is that it’s not just about your physical health but your mental health too. We should strive to consume a balance of protein, fat, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins, and minerals in our diets – eat in moderation and fuel your body with the nutritious meals, snacks, and treats you love.

  • Keep active

Before you start with your fitness-specific goals, work out the level of activity you should be aiming for each week. It’s recommended that adults do at least some physical activity every day – living a sedentary life is not recommended. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise a week, including strengthening activities on two days. Do this, and you should reap the benefits of a boosted mood, more energy and the reduced risk of heart disease.

4. Discover helpful health and wellness apps

You’ve already got a whole host of resources at your fingertips. That’s right, make the most of mobile apps to give you the motivation needed to achieve a healthier you this new year.

  • To make better choices whilst shopping and dive into the nutritional value of the foods you eat, take a look at ShopWell – it’s free on Apple and Android.
  • To build healthy habits, download Fabulous. The app takes a holistic approach that motivates you to be more productive by following prompts.
  • To practice more self-care and make more time to check in with yourself, make the most of Nafas Meditation App. Guiding you through short moments of meditation, approach your goals with a healthy mindset and lots of motivation.

5. Try something new in the kitchen or in the gym

Whether it’s getting creative in the kitchen by giving your hand to a few new recipes or heading to a new and fun exercise class for the first time, trying something new and discovering new healthy habits can be so rewarding.
